Hiccups are common in babies like adults it is the sign of developing diaphragm. The large muscles that go up and down when the baby takes a deep breath. Newborn hiccups are caused by overfeeding, eats too many foods, or swallow lots of air. Amy of these things can lead to stomach distention. Most of the experts say when the stomach distends it actually pushes against the diaphragm which causes it to spasm. Baby hiccups may also occur due to sudden increase or decrease in stomach temperature. For eg when you give a cold milk to the baby and after a few minutes later you give hot rice cereal. This is also the reason for baby hiccups after feeding. When a baby or infants suffer from gastroesophageal reflux, acidic juice and digested food from the stomach flows back up into the oesophagus causing burning and discomfort to the baby which is not good.

The oesophagus passes through the diaphragm. This may cause or lead to baby hiccups. It may not always create problems for the babies and infant. Baby can have hiccups multiple times in the day lasting for 15 minutes or more. If the baby is happy and does not feel uncomfortable. So baby hiccups are not a cause for concern. Generally, hiccups go away after a few minutes. You have to wait it out and allows the hiccups to resolve on their own. If the baby feel uncomfortable and distress then call a paediatrician to check the cause.

How To Get Rid Of Baby Hiccups After Feeding?

In most of the cases, hiccups are always harmless and normal for you. But everybody wants the baby to get relief from such spasms. As we know hiccuping occur due to overfeeding in most of the cases. You must feed a baby in smaller amounts to prevent hiccups and remember to burp baby frequently.

How to stop hiccups in breastfed or bottle fed babies.

  • If the baby is breastfed than:

1. Burp baby as you switch from one breast to another breast.

2. If swallowing the air is the main issue of hiccups then make sure baby lips are sealed around the areola of your breast, not to the nipple.

  • If the baby is bottle fed:

1. Try to reposition the bottle so the air is not near the nipple but it is instead at the bottom of the bottle.

2. Rub the baby back to prevent baby hiccups after feeding.

What Not To Do For Baby Hiccups After Feeding?

1. Never startle or scare the baby to combat hiccups. These types of nonsense do not work.

2. Please don’t put the wet cloth on their forehead which does not help the baby in hiccups.

Tips To Prevent Baby Hiccups After Feeding

  • Try to give your baby smaller but more frequent feeds.
  • Please feed your baby in a more upright position.
  • Please hold your baby upright for 20 minutes after every feed.
  • If the baby is fed by bottle then burp him during feed after every 2 to 3 minutes.
  • After feeding the baby void heavy activity with your baby eg bouncing up and down etc.
